Clarkes of Cavan – For all you Cycling Needs!
Road bikes are used as the name suggests on the road. They have a fine frame, thin tires, a short wheelbase and drop or flat handlebars. They are light and designed for speed. They won’t stand up to any off-road cycling and build for use on good surfaces like tarmac.
If you have plans to enter triathlons, charity rides or commute to work over tarmac these are ideal.
Road bikes come in various sizes for all sizes of riders. Drop in or Call to speak to one of our friendly helpful staff about what size suits you.
Think of a cross between a road and a mountain bike and you basically have your hybrid. Hybrids combine the best features of both mountain and road bikes. They make for very good riding on shorter cycles. They have slimmer frames than mountain bikes and narrower tires but slightly raised handlebars for a comfortable upright position.
They do perform better on road and are generally used for leisure or commuting. They are generally a little more comfortable and stable than road bikes but not as fast and don’t have as high a gear range as a mountain bike.
Mountain Bikes usually have wide tires and suspension making for a more stable ride and a bike that can handle rugged terrain without falling apart.
While they are not as fast as road bikes they do have a wider range of gears suitable for climbing. If you plan to do more on road riding than off, or a combination, you can put on slick tires that are better suited to tarmac.
Mountain bikes also make good touring bikes although you can’t pack gear around the suspension so it can limit what or how you carry gear. Do be aware also that if you are not using the mountain bike intentionally for what it was designed you are really paying for unnecessary features.
An electric bike is a bicycle that is electrically assisted via a motor that provides power to help push the bike along.
These bikes have become more popular of late with people commuting to work who don’t want to arrive sweaty or out of breath.
They are powered by electric motors and the amount of assistance can be controlled. They have a more hybrid appearance and are heavier than the standard bicycle so if the engine is turned off they are harder to ride.
Here at Clarkes of Cavan we have a large selection of Childrens Bikes. Wheel Sizes from 12 - 26".

1. GET FITTER & HEALTIER
A relaxing bike ride burns more calories than an easy walk, Cycling is a great way to supplement an active lifestyle.
2. EASY ON YOUR LEGS, ANKLES, KNEES & FEET
Cycling is easier on your lower body than running. It gets your heart pumping without pounding your joints. Running has the potential to take its toll on the body. Biking, on the other hand, is far lower impact and engages the muscles in the legs without as much force coming down on the knees. So long as you keep your legs pumping on your bike, it ends up being a smoother, lower risk form of cardio you’ll appreciate, especially if you're recovering from an injury.
3. INCREASE FAMILY TIME
Cycling is an activity the whole family can do together. Even a small child can get into a bike seat or tow-along buggy, and because it’s kind on your joints, there’s nothing to stop grandparents joining in too. As well, your cycling habit could influence your children to exercise more often. Studies have found that, unsurprisingly, kids are influenced by their parents’ exercise choices. Put simply, if your kids see you riding regularly, they think it’s normal and will want to follow your example.
4. MAKE FRIENDS, HAVE FUN
The social side of cycling is as good as the exercise itself, cycling is a great way to get out with friends or make new friends. There are plenty of clubs around that you can join and even increase the fun by competing in races.
5. GET AROUND
Cycling is a cheap and healthy way of getting around. In big towns and cities it is quicker too! So ditch the car and cycle to work!
